Human Migration

History in Motion

The Genographic Project by National Geographic, has long studied the patterns of migration of animals and man. Animal’s migrations are usually genetic in origin focused on the instinct of survival.  In Humans, the reasons are not that simple.  In the “Atlas of the Human Journey,” there are maps depicting theories of human migration and how humans got from one continent to another that have raised many questions.  For example: Why does the map show more migration, over time, to the Southern portion of North America and the Northern portion of South America.  The answer would seem to be climate.  On further study, you’ll see also that people from Europe migrated in similar amounts to both North and South.  Clearly, there are more variables involved for human migrators and with time, these patterns rearrange themselves geographically. The relocation appears to be based on 2 differing variables: Abundance of resources being the most obvious one and Disasters, natural or other wise, being the other.  Millions flocked to the shores of America hoping to find relief from poverty, oppression or both.  We have even coined a phrase to reflect these sentiments in people all over the world: “The American Dream.” (more…)

Customs Regulations

Customs Regulations

Customs is one of the major hassles in international moving. Each country has a lot of policies which differ ever so slightly in words but there is usually an ocean of difference in their meanings and implications. So it is with the United States of America. The procedure can be uncomplicated and less demanding as long as one can produce all the necessary documents supporting one’s move to the new country.

Some of the documents which one should have are a valid immigrant visa, a confirmation of permanent residence for all family members travelling with oneself, a current and valid passport or travel document for each one, two copies of the detailed list of all things one is carrying and two copies of the detailed list of all things arriving later by freight. As a proof of good faith, one will also be asked to show the availability of funds for a six month period able to cover food, rent, clothing, transportation and other living expenses. These procedures are similar to the Canadian customs too. (more…)
