“Moving” Stories case 1103073 : Mitch A. from San Francisco
I found a service provider who quoted me lower than many others and decided to try them out. They took an online payment, a deposit they said, and I got my papers via fax.
My mover told me the insurance I got was no good and even told me they would not work with the service unless I gave them a waiver of some sort. This was odd, I thought, since the stories I heard from friends usually had the insurance disapproving the mover. Turns out the moving insurance I had gotten was from a fly-by-night outfit some jerk was running out of his bedroom pc. That was the last time I bought anything online.
The next morning I went out to an agency referred to me by a friend. This nice lady gave me the usual spiel about needing protection and coverage from theft. I had nothing better to do that afternoon so I sat in on her explanations of their process, besides they had pretty good coffee. I found out that there was a rising number of rogue movers out there matched by a lot of fly-by-night insurance agencies, one of which I had fallen victim to. I was thinking of letting the “deposit” I paid slide but after hearing this lady’s words I was fired up. I wanted my money back.
It was a long and convoluted process and I was eventually able to reclaim only part of what I paid for “deposit” after the credit card charges, but I had satisfaction from shafting the wiseguy.
So the movers came and packed my stuff. One of them broke a vase my sister gave me one Christmas, I didn’t cry for it but I claimed on that. They packed all my furniture and kitchen stuff, and thanks to my paying attention to the insurance lady I kept my own list of items and had the crew chief sign off on it.

Moving Stories case 1103001
Last summer, my office sent me to train in Kansas City for a year and I had to bring my daughter in tow. Now Wichita is a long way from Kansas City and I couldn’t bear to leave my girl that far away and she felt the same. I didn’t have anyone to leave her with and we are so close I wouldn’t have left her behind if I did. So I claimed my deposit from where I was renting, packed us up in my truck and drove away. It took two days to get there and I realized I’d lost track of some household things and lost them somewhere along the way. Just small things mind you but they held sentimental value; my mom’s brush that she gave to my baby girl, my dad’s pocketwatch that kept time better than any of those digital things people carry around everywhere. Just a few small things.
We got to the big city and eventually found our way around. I got us a nice apartment in a complex a stone’s throw from the freeway that had a pool and a minigolf course. I unloaded everything to realize some fool had been stealing from the truck after every trip to and from the apartment. I lost a lamp, the TV and some shoes. I went to bed that night with my truck’s radio under my pillow.
The next morning I shopped around for a school for my girl. Luckily our new digs wasn’t too far away from the local public school and we did the interviews that day. The next day I dropped my darling off and got to the training center where folks were friendly. Some even offered to put us up but I’d only just met them. One dude in particular was pretty vocal about how I survived the trip without moving insurance. He was surprised I didn’t lose everything on the way over and I told him that made two of us.

“Moving” Stories
My company downsized in 2009 and I lost a longtime job because of budget cuts. It was cool they paid me a settlement for my severance package. For years I’d been their monkey and I definitely understood the need to trim the fat but I didn’t think I’d get axed. I contested but it ran long so I had to move to a place I could afford. The movers weren’t a problem, I had a cousin in the business, but I felt getting moving insurance against his goons taking some stuff was a wise move so I did it. Good thing too!
The old office dealt with claim jumpers and bail bonds so I was used to the element. I knew my stuff was a prime target for unsavory individuals since it is the newly released ones that end up finding placement in a moving agency, at least that’s what I saw with my cousin’s company. These guys were fresh out of options since even in this day and age no one wants to hire an ex-con. And it was these types of people who would be handling my furniture, my electronics, boxing up my small items and knick-knacks so of course I was going to get moving insurance.
To their credit they arrived on time to do the packing. Within thirty minutes my couch was covered in bubble wrap and my bed frame disassembled. The crew chief was explaining to me how he’d been doing the job for ten years even before working for my cousin when I noticed three men went into my room to carry out my beddings yet only two came out with stuff. One of their crew was still inside. I said I needed to use the toilet one last time and went into the room to find this tall, lanky tattooed guy hovering over a box holding my personal effects. He claimed he dropped his keys into the box and was about to fish them out when walked in on him.

“Moving” Stories case 1103055 : Wilma N. from San Bernardino
Last year was a turning point for me. I had recently graduated from college and in this economy it took me three months to get a job, unfortunately it was in another state so I would have to pick up and move. My dad helped me pick out a moving insurance to protect my trip. I never filled up a credit card application though there were many people pushing them into my hands in school (my folks always said not to because it would only increase my spending) so I didn’t have the credit history the insurance was looking for. I got one the folks could afford and packed my meager belongings into my beat up Japanese sedan and headed west.
The company I worked for hired me as a data analyst and it took me two days to get acclimated though I had not unloaded everything off my car yet. People were friendly and I got a nice apartment for cheap not too far away. It was near the end of my first week when I was heading to my car and noticed someone had busted my rear driver’s side window and made off with a few boxes I had in the back. After the shock wore off and a few co-workers had hugged me to death I set out to my place and finally finished unloading what was in my car.
The next morning I took the time to review my moving insurance and found I was covered for the theft but not the damage to my car. I began the process with a call to my folks. They contacted the service who sent a nice man to inspect the incident. Of course I had cleaned up a bit by the time he arrived but he was accommodating and gave a favorable report.

Our home was mortgaged in 2004 and again in 2008, the banks foreclosed in mid 2009 and I had to find a new home for me and my son. I found a cheaper place to maintain in the outer edge of our state but it was pretty far away and through some rough neighborhoods. I couldn’t afford an expensive moving company but somehow my name got to insurance companies and they called to offer their services for moving insurance.
My husband died in desert storm but the military’s money stopped coming in the mail when the financial crisis happened. I used to as work as an accountant and made a modest living, enough for us and the needs. I have a brother who did landscaping and he volunteered to help move us to our new home. Money was tight and I didn’t have much choice so I welcomed it. He told me I should listen to the insurance agency and get some moving insurance. I told him there was little need since we didn’t have much but at his insistence I went to the agency and sat with a young man who told me he was happy to be of service.
The agent told me they offered different sorts of policies for different purposes and we sat for a few hours negotiating terms. Surprisingly I found the accident rate for movers was very high and not surprisingly it made me want the insurance more. He said that even folks who move themselves have options and it would be better to get protected before the move as the new neighborhood would raise my premiums later on. I settled on a policy I could afford and covered our things for a tidy sum.
That weekend, the agent came to my place to inspect the move, my brother came by with his truck and we packed everything and loaded up. My mattress and couch were too big to fit so they stayed behind for later retrieval. Instead we took all the glassware, the bathroom amenities, the rugs and chairs and tables. It looked a sight coming down the road, sort of like we were on our way to the junkyard with all manner of things in tow.
My brother took a wrong turn somewhere and we ended up getting lost in that bad part of town I mentioned. The insurance agent cringed in the backseat next to my son as unsavory plant workers strolled nearby. They were obviously drunk and were looking for trouble. I told my brother to drive through the stoplight but before it turned green a beefy arm busted his window and tore him out of the seat. Three men were bullying him in the street and I shouted for help but no one came. They turned their attention to the truck and shouted for us to get out, we complied. The poor boy from the insurance agency tried to argue but got socked in the eye for it.
The police found my brother’s truck the next day, all my things gone.
Some of my late husband’s friends took an interest and found a way to hurry my insurance claim and now me and my son live in a safe neighborhood, my brother got a new truck from insurance too, I got a new job as well; selling moving insurance.
