Valuing your items for a Moving Insurance

You can do this by (1) writing down all significant pieces of furniture; glassware, appliances, electronics, personal effects, etc…, (2) give each a mark and an approximate weight. If you have a large number of books that you’ll be packing into boxes, (3) assign each box an approximate weight and state it on the outside of the box. This can be applied to clothes, kitchen items, tools and other loose items. (4) mark each box an approximate replacement value, it would only aid you in the workers handling of your items. Be careful when you price a high value item as the mover may not give you a value you would be comfortable with.

In case you are moving specific and expensive items like works of art or jewelry you must be exact in your details of the item. Some movers would require you to produce an appraisal by a third party of their choosing. Upon approval you must provide specific instructions regarding the handling of the item.

Replacement value means the cost to replace the item with another item of comparable material and quality. The replacement must be used for the same purpose. This applies unless the cost to repair or replace the damaged item is less at the discretion of the insurer.

It is a good idea to take photos of all pieces, especially items of sentimental value or high appraisal. This will assist in keeping track of your inventory despite the list supplied to you by the mover. The idea is to have your own independent system to countercheck the movers and keep them honest. This will help if you need to make a claim.

Should I rely on my moving company’s coverage for Insurance?

Choosing Your Moving Insurance

A lot of people don’t give it a second thought until it is too late that they need good insurance when moving. Some service providers state there is insurance but not how much the items would be valued at since this would prove disastrous to replace a Faberge’ egg or a Matisse painting. Common coverage is accountable for cents on the dollar which translates to a lower cost to ship or deliver which is pleasing to the eye of the one moving to a new place until things go missing and suddenly their expensive valuables are worth a fraction of their cost.

There are a lot of reasons to be selective when choosing your moving insurance:

  1. The insurance options are important! The All Risk insurance option provides for a full replacement value coverage, which translates to the insurance paying off a replacement value of items found damaged or lost. Actual Cash Value option will allow for a devaluated measure of your items’ value. As for the Total Loss option, insurance usually covers the total insured amount of money, less the deductible fees. Programs offered by Professional services use a restricted coverage and usually do not render a full compensation.

Container Moving:Have You Seen My Pod?

No doubt, if you’ve traveled along any residential road, you’ve probably seen a huge metal white box or two, standing outside a home and wondered, what is that?

It may look like a huge garbage dumpster, but it’s not. It’s a “POD.”

People are choosing a new way to move which allows them both the convenience and time to move, with storage containers called pods.

Pods were designed for the consumer who prefers to pack up, bit by bit, rather than all at once. Movers who aren’t in a hurry and don’t mind packing their belongings themselves, are spared a lot of the problems inherent in a moving company move.

The first is the abundance of time. Those who hate the stress of that one day spectacle and the sleepless night before can relax. Pods are delivered to movers at their homes, much like dumpsters and there’s no time limit on their use.

One is, in fact, renting the cubicle, so there are no time constrictions, just one’s own pocketbook. Psychologists have discovered that one of the most severe stressors for individuals and families is moving. Only the death of a loved one is considered more stressful according to many studies done from the 1960′s onward, with only the death of a loved one considered to be more stressful.

Second, it’s far less expensive to do it yourself. Owing to the fact that no moving company is used, these pods are easier on the budget, too. About half what a regular move costs, as they’re shipped as freight. They’re far less expensive then the typical u-haul move, too. With gas prices on the rise, it’s a thrifty alternative to get your things where they’re going without you having to drive them.
